Now You See Me

Woho, I finally got to see this crime / mystery movie. It was released this year and even though I don’t really like crime movies this was great. I mainly decided to watch it because of the story and the visuals. I was not disappointed.

Amongst the cast there are many familiar faces, Morgan Freeman is the most famous one out of a few others. The story is about a group of magicians who rob a bank in front of a huge audience. Now it’s up to CIA to solve this strange phenomenon.

The visuals are great, the characters are all likable in one way or another, the plot has originality going for it and the acting is done well. Still it’s not a clear 10 / 10. This is because of the mystery part. I don’t really like movies where the viewer is supposed to solve the puzzle of the movie. It was done really well in this movie, but it is still not my style and towards the middle of the movie I just wanted for things to speed up.

Like many others (Life of Pi and Avatar) this is a movie that I think is partly worth seeing for the visual effects. The difference is that the movies I mentioned are extraordinary and Now You See Me is “just” a great ordinary movie. Still the plot is pretty special if you remove the puzzle solving bits. The problem was the ending. The movie kept building up tension and at the end I was kind of disappointed. I did not foresee the ending at all, but it still felt kind of plain to me. Tough I would say that this is a normal movie with extraordinary parts in it that makes the movie a must see. 8 / 10

Scary MoVie (5)

Here we have it…. How do I put this in a nice way? The epitome of s**t! I thought that the original scary movie was mildly entertaining. Now they have made five movies of this parody movie franchise and the V in MoVie represents the digit 5.

If anyone has missed it Scary Movie is all about making parodies of well known movies, originally just horror movies. But we see parodies of movies in other genres as well. So it is technical like ten movie parodies in one and the cast are this time familiar faces who play awful stereotypical characters.

I was surprised to see how many celebs that actually joined this movie. This must be some kind of record for the movie franchise. How do you judge the acting skills when the actors are supposed to play characters with poor acting abilities? Well it turns out to be an ocean of badness. As for the plot I must say that it was the worst thing I have seen so far and it was not even remotely funny.

There is one exception. The sex scene? If you can call it one? Well either was Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen brought the only slightly amusing moment of the film for the viewers to see. Let’s now pretend that you have seen the movie. You have pretty much lost all of your intelligence so you might as well stick around for the credits. Then you will get a several minute bloopers. They were a million times funnier than the move but they are in the credits so I won’t include it in my score. Therefore I think this will actually be one of the lowest ratings I have done in a while… 1 / 10 stars.

Sex scene? Or the weirdest gymnastic odd thing I have seen to an epic soundtrack? (The screen capture looks bad, I know, sorry about that.)

Man of Steel

I am surprised, I have pretty much been able to do all the things I wanted to do this week. This will mean some more movie posts this week, or well next week since the week is almost over. But I actually have weekend updates this time that will consist of a movie and a book.

The thing about superman is that I don’t really have to explain what it is about. We have pretty much all seen the concept in one form or another. But it is basically about a kid who came to earth as a child and grew up to have superpowers and once he has reach adulthood the inhabitants of the planet he came from want to destroy earth.

I have never really been such a fan of superman. But this was something else. The movie was extremely well made visually. The sound effects were really good to, along with the acting. Tough there were some background actors that I did not really like that much. As tired as I am of the superman concept this was really well made, so if superman is your thing as this is a must see. 8 / 10

This is a Swedish movie that was in the theaters about the same time as Les Miserables. (Could it have been in December?) This was the movie many people talked about so I decided it was about time that I would finally see it.

This is a story about the typical rich boy who hits on all the supermodel looking girls. Until he loses his sight and everything gets a new perspective and one day he falls for a girl who is not a supermodel-look-alike and just a normal girl, but he doesn’t know this of course.

For the fist twenty minutes I wanted to throw a baseball bat at my TV. Not only did the opening contain one of the songs I hate the most, it also showed me that the entire movie was going to be a big cliché! I mean I had already guessed it from the plot summary but I did not know it was going to be this bad! I carefully calculated in my head that I would probably get the worst headache ever if I kept hating every second of the movie so I decided to accept that this movie was going to be all about clichés.

Then I started to try and like the movie for what it was and then it got a bit better. This does not help the fact that we have all seen this movie before. But I guess people actually like the movie for that ridiculous love story that I hate so much. Then we have the whole I am a singer aspect that I did not really like either.

In the end this is a typical movie that we have all seen before. Still I have to say that it is pretty well done but this is not the type of movie that will ever be better than average due to the overused concept.  5 / 10

Strictly Ballroom

A dance movie recommendation I got from a friend. This is a movie from 1992 and the genres are comedy and drama. This review will be pretty short since I don’t really have that much to say except that this is not my type of movie. The movie is all about a male dancer who are tired at his old dance routines and wants’ to create something new, with a new partner.

This is a typical feel good movie where everything is exaggerated out to the extremes. I have never been a fan of those types of movies so I was not pleased. There is nothing wrong about the plot in itself it’s just that exaggerating everything around it ruins it all. The characters are overacting and it is supposed to be funny, but I have never liked that kind of humor.  I find it more of an annoyance when you make stereotypical overacting characters in the background and I just smack them with a shovel. That made me think of a quote there is on a whiteboard in one of my classrooms “if you erase this, you will get hit, in the face, with a chair” and I kept thinking in my head “if you keep exaggerating, you will be hit, in the face, with a chair.

I think it’s pretty safe to say that this movie is really wrong for someone like me even though I liked the plot. But if you think this is one suits you then I would recommend it, because if you liked the things I complained about you might find this to be great! 5 / 10

Spring Breakers

It’s time for some brand new movies again. This is a drama and a comedy movie (tough most won’t find it funny at all because there is nothing funny about it.) Due to the actors (Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine) this movie caused a lot of controversy so I was interested to see what all the fuss was about. We also get to see James Franco looking really unlike himself…

The plot is about four girls who go on their spring break. It all is fun to begin with until things start to get uncomfortable and by uncomfortable I mean jail run-ins and a meeting with a special person who makes the dream spring break into the girl’s worst nightmare.

Judged by the trailer I thought this was going to be pretty Project X like, just another party movie. It was, for the first 25% or something like that. Then the movie get’s a lot more complex and it is not a party movie anymore. I found that to be confusing at first and for the first ten minutes I did not like the new twist at all. Then it keeps improving and the movie turns in to a dark and almost sadistic movie since the characters have put themselves in a situation they are not comfortable with at all.

I found the ending to be amazing and after having finished the movie I was actually pretty happy with the plot. The visuals were also very good, we get to see a lot of vibrant neon colors that I liked since they make the movie a little more special. I’m not really sure about the characters other than I think that they match the plot.

Even though the movie could have been really bad due to the twist, it all turned around for the better, it’s not a revolutionary movie but if you were looking for something outstanding when you were watching it you might have been a tad to positive. So over all it was pretty good and you get a different perspective on the party scene when it takes a turn for the worst. 8 / 10

Woho, I have finally read my first Stephen King book, this is something I planned on doing for a long time but I never really got around to actually do it. This thing that motivated me was the upcoming new movie version of Carrie with an actress I really like. If you have missed it I’ll give you the trailer and then you won’t even have to read my plot summary.

Now you technically won’t need the summary but I’ll throw it in here anyway. Carrie is a seventeen-year-old girl who is telekinetic (she can movie things with her mind) and lives with the religious extremist who is also her mother. Carrie has always been bullied and one day it all goes too far and it all ends in a disaster.

Now I can clearly see why Stephen King is so famous, his writing style is pretty special and even though I liked it in the beginning I fund all the different angles I got to read from a bit too much. An example of that would be the last fifty pages which would only have been ten if the perspective didn’t constantly shift. The ending moment or part three of the book is the peak of the plot and I tough that the plot shifts took away a lot of the built up tension even though you learned a lot about the story from them.

The plot on the other hand was really interesting, it was special and I liked how intense it got towards the end. Carrie, the mother and the rest of the characters were phenomenal as well. The mother was really an original individual that contributed to most of the horror elements. Personally I have never really grasped the horror elements in a book. Are they supposed to scare you? Because personally I am never scared, it’s exciting to read horror books tough I’m never scarred and in most cases I would not have known if the book I’m reading is a horror book simply by reading it. I don’t know if it’s just me who feels that way so throw me some responses in the comments so I can understand the horror genre in books better.

In the end Carrie was great in many ways but it failed in the perspectives aspects. I think that this is one of those books that will look great as movies so I am really keeping my fingers crossed when I hit the theaters in October. 8 / 10
